So I taught at City Dance last night and had an atypical number of new students - mostly girls. Two of them stood out because of their foreign accents when they asked questions. At the end of class, one of the girls approached me.
Girl: Hi I’m Sophie.
Me: Hey, I’m Jardy.
Sophie: I know! I watch your videos.
Not wanting to look judgmental, I refrained from asking her where she was from, even though her accent clearly suggested that she wasn’t from the area.
Girl: It’s so nice to meet you! I’m from Singapore.
Me: Oh Singapore? Really? Well, it’s great to meet you too Sophie.
After we said our goodbyes, I walked out of the studio. On the way to the car, I heard a faint voice to my right.
Voice: Thank you for class…
I looked to see that it was the other girl in class with a unique accent. Hers was of the European variety, and very heavy. Confident from my last conversation, I turned to her.
Me: Oh you’re very welcome. By the way, where are you from?
Girl: Oakland.
Me: Oakland?
Girl: *nods*
Me: Well, it’s great meeting you. *walks away, embarrassed*
Moral of the story: Never speak in public again.
